  3. Look at me writing meta

When people ask me for my favorite LotR character I usually reply ALL THE HOBBITS (AND CREATURES THAT USED TO BE HOBBITS); I think if you forced me to pick one individual I’d go with Smeagol/Gollum, or maybe Sam. Sam I like on a purely OMG he’s perfect/flawless/amazing/heroic level, whereas Gollum is so disturbingly, tragically fascinating.

Really, I think the best thing is how Frodo, Sam, and Gollum make up a power trio: ego, superego, and id. At the moment of truth, it takes all three of them (albeit dysfunctionally) to destroy the Ring. That’s fantastic.

John and I were talking about LotR earlier today, and he said one of the things that makes LotR stand out above its imitators is how thematically consistent it is. This is just one example I was mulling over tonight while watching the movie. In a sense, Frodo, Sam, and Gollum are a single character, and that character is my favorite. (Shut up it is not cheating.)

Hobbits are the BEST okay and Gollum is like a freaking deconstruction of hobbitness right there in the text, aglahglahglhg I love it.

  5. My Hobbit confession

“Riddles in the Dark” is quite possibly my most favorite scene in all of fiction, EVER. So I like fainted at that clip from it in the trailer. Awwww yeah.
