World’s Tallest Tree: Hyperion, a coast redwood in California. 379.3 feet/115.6 metres tall. If you were on the 30th floor of a skyscraper, you might be able to look up and see the top of Hyperion. [photo source]

World’s Largest Tree by volume: General Sherman, a giant sequoia in California. (y u give ancient american tree a white man’s name). It is estimated to have a trunk volume of 52,513 cubic feet/1,487 cubic metres, and to weigh around 4,189,000 lbs/1,900 metric tons (which is like, fifteen blue whales, give or take). [photo source]

World’s Stoutest Tree: El Árbol del Tule, a Montezuma cypress in Oaxaca, Mexico. Its diameter is 38.1 feet/11.62 metres, and its circumference is 119 feet/36.2 metres. So, probably about the size of your living room or den. [photo source]

World’s Oldest Tree: Methuselah, a bristlecone pine in California. Estimated to be about 4840 years old. Methuselah was already over 2000 years old when the historical Buddha was born. [photo source]

Special Mention: Pando, aka the Trembling Giant, a quaking aspen colony in Utah. Depending on your definition of “tree,” Pando steals both General Sherman’s and Methuselah’s titles. Pando is a clonal organism, that is, a tree that keeps producing new copies of itself. There are about 47,000 trees in the colony right now, each one genetically identical. They share a single root system and collectively weigh around 13 million pounds (6,000 metric tons). Pando is most commonly estimated to be 80,000 years old, though I’ve seen some estimates that it could be up to a million years old. [photo source]
